Óbidos Medieval Festival

When it happens

Every summer in July, the charming medieval town of Óbidos is transformed for approximately 11 to 14 days by the Medieval Market, a vibrant and historic event that brings the past to life.

In 2025, it is scheduled for July 17th to 27th.

History & Environment

The festival celebrates the town's medieval heritage, filling the streets with period costumes, heraldic banners, musicians, falconers, artisans, and merchants who recreate the atmosphere of centuries past. Óbidos' historical context—founded on a Roman oppidum, conquered in 1148 by King Afonso Henriques, and often offered as a dowry to Portuguese queens—gives the event an authentic and unforgettable atmosphere.

What to expect

• Fairs and crafts: Hundreds of artisans and peddlers sell traditional wares from colorful stalls; the aromas of spices, roasted meats, and medieval delicacies permeate the air.

  
  

• Themed cuisine: Typical dishes such as rabbit, lamb, sausages, soups, rustic breads, and convent sweets are served on wooden plates and pewter mugs. There are also good vegetarian and vegan options.

  
  

• Shows and entertainment: Jousting performances, armed combat, traveling music, theater, court jesters, and parades enliven the streets of Óbidos.

How to get there:

To travel from Villa’s Pomar do Moinho, in Usseira, to Óbidos, there are several options:

1. By Car

The fastest and most convenient way is by car. The journey is approximately 7 km and takes about 10 minutes.

General directions:

• Leave Usseira toward the N8.

• Follow the N8 toward Óbidos.

• Upon arriving in Óbidos, you will find parking lots near the entrance to the town.

2. Public Transport

• Bus: Regional buses connect Usseira to Óbidos, but schedules may be limited. Check availability in advance.

• Train: Óbidos has a train station, but additional transportation from Usseira may be necessary, as direct connections are limited.

3. Taxi or Transportation Apps

A practical alternative is to take a taxi or use a ride-hailing service. The trip will be quick and comfortable, and reasonably priced given the short distance.

4. Walk or Bike

For those who enjoy outdoor activities, it's possible to walk or bike to Óbidos. The distance is short, and the road offers beautiful scenery. However, check the road conditions to ensure a safe journey.
