The imposing castle of Óbidos is the perfect backdrop for one of Portugal’s most enchanting experiences — the Medieval Market. In this vibrant scene, colorful tents, period-inspired buildings, and lively crowds fill the historic town as troubadours, knights, and artisans bring the Middle Ages to life. A true celebration of culture, history, and imagination — ideal for families, couples, and curious travelers.

In this vibrant scene, colorful tents, period-inspired buildings, and lively crowds fill the historic town as troubadours, knights, and artisans bring the Middle Ages to life. A true celebration of culture, history, and imagination — ideal for families, couples, and curious travelers.

Last summer, I made one of the most spontaneous (and happy!) decisions of my trip: I visited the Óbidos Medieval Market. I had heard about it before, mostly from places that described it as “like walking into a movie.” But I wasn’t prepared for the magic of walking through the gates of the walled town and being transported straight to the 14th century.

Now, with the 2025 edition fast approaching (July 17–27), I’m already making plans to return—and this time, I’m bringing friends and family, because this is an event that truly has something for everyone.

Remembering a Fairytale Summer

Last year’s theme was the legendary love story of Pedro and Inês, our very own Romeo and Juliet. Walking through the cobblestone streets of Óbidos, decorated with medieval flags and filled with costumed extras, it was easy to forget that we were in the 21st century.

I saw knights in tournaments, troubadours singing ballads, and artisans selling handmade goods that seemed to have come from another time. I sampled meats roasted over an open fire, cheeses served on clay plates, and ended the evening with a glass of mead under the starry sky.

But the best part? Seeing how the event comes to life for all ages.

Perfect for Families with Children

The Medieval Market is a dream for little ones.

I saw children—dressed as little knights and princesses—watching fire jugglers in the castle courtyard with wide eyes. There were puppet shows, storytelling chants, and traditional games all over the village. There were also falconry demonstrations, where children could see majestic birds up close. The joy on their faces was contagious.

And it’s not just entertainment—the event sparks curiosity about Portuguese history, heritage, and medieval lifestyle. It’s engaging, educational, and incredibly fun… all at the same time.

If you’re a parent looking for an enriching and memorable activity this summer, this is a great choice.

A Perfect Program for Couples

For couples, the atmosphere is pure magic. Óbidos is already considered one of the most romantic villages in b, often nicknamed the “wedding gift village” (it was given by a king to his queen!). But during the Medieval Market, this romanticism takes on an even more special glow.

Imagine strolling hand in hand through candlelit alleys, watching a night tournament to the sound of medieval music and toasting the sunset with a glass of Ginja served in a chocolate cup. It’s the kind of experience that creates unique memories — whether on a honeymoon, an anniversary celebration or simply a romantic getaway.

What to Expect in 2025

This year, the market returns with even more surprises:

  • 🎪 Jousting tournaments within the castle walls

  • 🎭 Daily theater shows and historical reenactments

  • 🧙‍♂️ Jugglers, musicians and magicians roaming the streets

  • 🛍️ Crafts market with traditional products and handicrafts

  • 🍗 Traditional food and drink (including vegetarian options!)

At the entrance you can rent medieval costumes and live the full experience (and you even get a discount on the ticket!).
